A custom home responding to topography, views and sustainability
Currently under construction - Completion in 2025
The Mountain Vista home elegantly addresses a multifaceted set of design challenges: capturing mountain views from a property misaligned with the vistas, maintaining harmony with the scenic landscape, and adhering to local building codes on a steep and constrained site without resorting to complex engineering.
The solution is a design that works with the hillside to achieve these design parameters. The lower level is embedded into the slope, minimizing earthwork and clad in monolithic materials that will patina gracefully, living as an extension of the rocky terrain. Above this base, the main living spaces are elevated and oriented to align with long mountain views, while the more private bedroom and office wing sit quietly in observance of the undisturbed site.
Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the home. Roof overhangs and orientations are meticulously designed to provide winter warmth and summer shade, while the home's integration into the hillside offers takes advantage of grounds natural heat-sinking qualities. Additionally, materials disrupted during construction were reclaimed and creatively repurposed for building elements such as stairs and retaining walls, further tying the home back to the site.
