Located outside of Encampment, Wyoming, the A Bar A Ranch is a cattle & guest ranch that has been under continuous operation since 1922.
BG Architecture + Design was selected to lead a sweeping revitalization of the Ranch with the goal of providing greater operational capabilities, upgraded infrastructure, and aesthetic enhancements. As the redevelopment would be integrated into the guest experience at the core of the Ranch, it was essential that the design solution honored the existing ethos, sense of place, and history.
A deep understanding of the Ranch’s goals and broader vision was integral to the success of the project. Highly executed documentation and collaboration with the contractor was critical as construction would occur in a brief window during harsh, Wyoming winter conditions.

The design process began with an extensive site programming exercise. In close coordination with the project’s landscape architect, James Hyatt Studio, The Ranch’s request for the redevelopment to create a central “camp quad” took shape. Over half of the project’s 13,000 square feet of development was located in this central area, providing seasonal staff housing and a commercial laundry & operations hub.

The design solution was informed by a thorough study of the historic structures on the ranch. In-depth research of period-specific design and construction methods served as inspiration for the architecture of the new buildings. The solution paired modern construction methods and building technologies with historically relevant materials and forms to create honest interpretations, but not replications, of history.
Outside of the camp quad, two single family homes were developed to host year-round ranch managment staff members. These structures address different sets of needs, such as enhanced comfort and privacy.
