Principal Designer
Origins & Background:
Barry's path to this point in his architectural career did not start with a typical architectural education. Growing up with a natural talent for artistic hand drawing, he found himself drawn to product, graphic and interior space design during college earning a degree in Industrial Design at The Ohio State University. Barry developed a sense of balance, proportion and harmony always with the goal of relating to the scale and ergonomics of the human form. From this education, it was a natural progression to apply his affinity for honesty of function and material to architecture.
After college and years of work for an architectural firm in Denver, his love of the mountains brought him to Aspen in 2004, where work at CCY Architects awakened his understanding of the artistic possibilities of great architecture. Barry became a designer and manager of talented teams for resort development projects. These projects included designing, documenting, and overseeing the construction of amenities such as; boutique hotels, community buildings, guest cabins, golf clubhouses and restaurants. As his experience grew he was included in early design charettes for sustainable resort community projects in California, Colorado and Idaho. Soon after leaving CCY, Barry launched bg design.
In addition to design, Barry is and has been involved with various charitable and non-profit organizations that contribute to the quality of life in the Roaring Fork Valley. Acting as a stream observer and data collector for The Roaring Fork Conservancy, he monitored and tested the East Fork of Sopris Creek for water quality and stream flows. This work was an extension of his love for the outdoors and contributing to the health and quality of his home fishing waters. Barry is an active volunteer for the Shining Stars Foundation, an organization that provides outdoor recreational programs for children with pediatric cancer or other life threatening illnesses. With respect to his family’s military background, Barry also currently volunteers for the Wounded Warrior Project during their annual visit to Aspen, as a snowmobile guide, cook and companion.
